Bereavement Suite Renovation thanks to charity appeal

Trigger warning: Baby loss

This week (9th-15th October) marks Baby Loss Awareness Week, a time for remembrance, and the offering of support for those affect by pregnancy and baby loss. Parents who suffer the heart-breaking loss of a baby face unimaginable pain. In 2021, with the help of our generous supporters, the charity were able to provide a much-needed renovation for the Bereavement Suite at the Jessop Wing, within the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. The space is now a calming place, where families can be supported through their grief.

Thanks to the supporters, the charity were able to transform the suite from a dull, dark space into a comfortable and peaceful area for bereaved families. Larger families are now able to sit together, and there are activities to distract siblings during times where parents require a moment of peace. The space also offers an area to conduct religious, spiritual and cultural ceremonies.

Whilst in the Bereavement suite, families also have the opportunity to make memories through photos, resin butterflies and flowers, ink and clay hand and footprints, memory boxes, and bears - all of which are also funded through charity donations.

Kerry Marston Giroux, Bereavement Services Manager (picture in image above in Bereavement Suite), said: "This project has made such a difference, making what is an incredible distressing experience just that little bit easier for the 250 families a year who need our support."
