On Friday 13th November, NHS staff and Sheffield Hospitals Charity colleagues will take to the floor at the voco Hotel, Sheffield, for a very special evening of dancing, fundraising and plenty of sparkle.
The event was first held in Sheffield 10 years ago and, after a long break, it’s back for its second outing, raising money to support Stroke Services across Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
Twelve brave contestants have been paired with talented local dance teachers, who are generously giving their time and expertise to help them learn specially choreographed routines. On the night, they’ll perform in front of a live audience, with Ballroom, Argentine Tango, Kizomba, Modern Jive and Rock & Roll all making an appearance.
There’s even a Glitter Ball Trophy up for grabs!
We’re incredibly grateful to the local dance community for getting behind Strokely Come Dancing. Through its connections across Sheffield, Dancing for Health CIC has brought together a brilliant group of local dance schools and experienced teachers to help our contestants prepare.
And while it’s going to be a lot of fun, there’s an important reason behind all those rehearsals and dance shoes.
Every penny raised will help support Stroke Services across Sheffield, funding things like specialist equipment, research, education and initiatives that make a difference to stroke survivors and their families and carers.
Dr Amanda Jones, Clinical Lead for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Stroke service said:
“We came up with the idea of Strokely Come Dancing in 2016, and despite the fact it is 10 years ago, colleagues still talk about it fondly. It not only highlighted the effects of stroke, but it was a fantastic example of colleagues coming together, and working tirelessly to provide a fantastic celebration, and raising much needed funds to enhance patient care, and also helped staff to develop research and improve their skills to provide high-quality care. At a time when the NHS is facing more challenges than ever, this highlights that people are willing to go the extra mile, and the funds raised will really help further improve care for stroke patients. It will be a night of fun and celebration.”
For our Director of Fundraising, Greg van Heeswijk, taking part is particularly meaningful. His nan recently died following a stroke, so he’ll be taking to the dancefloor in her memory.
“I’ll be dancing in her memory and to show Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s support for the brilliant Stroke team. It will mean a huge amount to think of her on the night, while hopefully raising plenty of money to support stroke patients and their families across Sheffield.”
Tracey Barnes, Managing Director at Dancing for Health CIC, said:
“We wanted to be part of Strokely Come Dancing because we have seen first-hand the positive impact dance can have on people affected by stroke. Inclusive dance programmes can help people build confidence, improve movement and coordination, reconnect socially and experience the wider benefits of being active. Dance can also provide valuable stimulation for the brain.
“It is fantastic to see the event return to Sheffield and to be able to bring together our local dance community with NHS staff and Sheffield Hospitals Charity to support such an important cause.”
We’re so excited to see the contestants step outside their comfort zones, learn something completely new and, hopefully, discover a few hidden dancing talents along the way!
Most importantly, we’re looking forward to seeing people come together to celebrate the incredible work of our Stroke teams and raise vital funds to help them continue improving care for people affected by stroke across Sheffield.
Tickets are available here for a minimum donation of £25, with every ticket helping to support stroke care across Sheffield.
